46% Elected MLAs in Odisha have Criminal Records

Nation First News:  The Odisha Election Watch and Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) on Sunday revealed that 67 out of 146 (46%) elected MLAs in Odisha have criminal records while 49 (39%) MLAs have serious criminal records against them.

Criminal Background

Party wise Candidates with Criminal Cases: Among the MLAs (party wise), 46 (41%) out of 112 MLAs from BJD, 14 (61%) out of 23 MLAs from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and 6 (67%) out of 9 elected legislators from Congress have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Among the major parties, 33 (30%) out of 112 MLAs from BJD, 10 (44%) out of 23 MLAs from BJP and 5 (56%) out of 9 MLAs from Congress have serious criminal cases against themselves.

MLAs with serious criminal cases: 49(34%) MLAs have declared serious criminal cases including cases related to murder, attempt to murder, kidnapping etc.

Out of 147 MLAs analysed during Odisha Assembly elections in 2014, 41 (28%) MLAs had declared serious criminal cases against themselves.

Red Alert Constituencies*: There are 25 out of 42 constituencies in the Odisha assembly elections, Phase III, having 3 or more candidates with declared criminal cases.

MLAs with declared cases related to murder:  2 MLAs, MLAs have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section 302).

MLAs with declared cases related to attempt to murder: 11 MLAs, MLAs have declared cases related to attempt to murder (IPC Section 307)

Party wise MLAs with criminal cases:  46(41%) out of 112 MLAs from BJD, 14 (61%) out of 23 MLAs from BJP and 6 (67%) out of 9 MLAs from INC have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Party wise MLAs with serious criminal cases:  33(30%) out of 112 MLAs from BJD, 10 (44%) out of 23 MLAs from BJP and 5 (56%) out of 9 MLAs from

INC have declared serious criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.

Crorepati MLAs: Out of the 146 newly elected MLAs, 95 (65%) are crorepatis. Out of 147 MLAs analysed during Odisha 2014 assembly elections, 76 (52%) MLAs were crorepatis.

Average assets: The average assets per MLA for 112 BJD MLAs analysed is Rs 5.08 crores and 23 BJP MLAs have average assets of Rs 1.01 crore and 9 INC.

Party wise average assets: Among major parties, the average assets per candidate for 42 BJD candidates analysed is Rs. 4.58 crores, 42 BJP candidates analysed is Rs 3.55 crores, 41 INC candidates have average assets of Rs 7.03 crores, 5 AAP candidates have average assets of Rs 63.37 lakhs and 30 BSP candidates have average assets worth Rs. 40.89 lakhs.

OTHER BACKGROUND DETAILS

Education Details of MLAs: 43 (29%) MLAs have declared their educational qualification to be between 5 th pass and 12 th pass while 101 (69%) MLAs have declared having an educational qualification of graduate or above. 2 MLAs are Diploma holder.

Age details of MLAs: 2 (1%) MLAs have declared their age to be between 25 and 30 years while 13 (9%) MLAs have declared their age to be between 31 and 40 years. There are 123(84%) MLAs who have declared their age to be between 41 and 70 years while 8(5%) MLAs have declared their age to be between 71
and 80.

Gender details of MLAs:Out of 146 MLAs, 13 (9%) MLAs are women. In 2014, out of 147 MLAs, 11 (7%) MLAs were women.
