CWC 2019 being dedicated to Rain God
Nation First News: Only two matches were abandoned in any single tournament due to rains in the 44-year-old history of Cricket World Cup. But, the record was shattered in 2019 with 4 matches being washed out in just 18 out of 48 matches! In the previous occasions, two matches each were abandoned due to rains in 1992 & 2003. In 1979, 1999, 2011 & 2015, we had seen one washout each.
With no reserve day in CWC 2019, we saw 3 matches – Pakistan vs Sri Lanka, Bangladesh vs Sri Lanka & India vs New Zealand matches getting abandoned without a single ball being bowled. The South Africa vs West Indies match was abandoned, but was lucky to get 7.3 overs. So, it’s 4 in 2019 so far.
It may not stop here. With 30 more matches remaining in CWC 2019, we should not be surprised to see more such abandoned games in the coming days.
