NFN Bureau: “Please save me. I don’t want to die. I want to live”, were the last words of Unnao rape survivor before she fell unconscious. But, she could not be saved.
She was set afire by 5 men on the way to court. Shockingly, 2 of them were her rapists, who were out on bail. She had to run for almost a km to get help while burning. She was first rushed to Lucknow hospital, then airlifted to Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi with 90% burns. She died of a cardiac arrest late last night.
The name ‘Unnao’ has now become synonymous with rape & crime against women. It gained notoriety when the rape case involving BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar came to light.
Unnao District, with a population of about 31 lakhs, has reported 86 rape cases in the last 11 months. In addition, 185 cases of sexual harassment of women have also been reported.
The rising cases of crime against women in Unnao, has been attributed to politicisation of police force, inefficiency of Cops and failure of Yogi Adityanath Govt to address the issue with urgency. Hopefully, things will change now following this latest incident that has shaken the conscience of the nation.
